Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at Mutong in Huamujia, Funing County, Yunnan. The Mutong Fm was named by Yunnan Party of Regional Geological Survey (1986), and was published by Yunnan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (1990).

Synonym: (木同组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Mutong Fm is dominated by gray-dark gray medium-bedded fine-crystalline limestone and argillaceous limestone. It is 50-287 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in fault contact with the underlying strata. The next older regional unit is the Shizipu Fm.

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Lower Devonian Pojiao Fm

Regional extent

The Mutong Fm is restricted to Mutong and Nongsanpan in Funing and Heizhe in Wenshan.

Fossils

This stratigraphic unit yields cephalopods Richardsonoceras asiaticum, Sinoceras aff. chinense, Discoceras eurasiaticum, Lituites and coral Propora, Ninanophyllum ningnanense.
